Consists of one autograph letter signed by J.A. Garfield, Col. Cmdg. Brigade, addressed to Lt. Willey Patrick, 14th Ky. Volunteers. Col. Garfield orders Lt. Patrick in the letter "to proceed forthwith to deliver the enclosed summons, and cause the parties summoned to report forthwith to these Head Quarters." The letter is sent from Head Quarters 18 Brigade, Piketon, Ky, and dated 12 March 1862.

James Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831. After embarking on an academic career, he joined the Ohio volunteer infantry regiment, and in 1863 was appointed Major General in the same regiment. He served as a member of the U. S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1880, when he was elected President.
